One of the most prestigious tennis tournaments serving both ATP and WTA 1000 clay court events. Taking place in Madrid yearly end of April with the final this year may 2 and 3, it comes just before the French Open. Mutua Madrid often serves as a critical preparation ahead of Roland Garros.

Although it is one the more recent tournaments having only started in 2002 initially as an ATP hard court indoor tournament in autumn. It transformed into including women as well as clay courts instead in 2009 having further only expanded to a two week tournament including 96 players draw between 2021-2023. Despite it is ranked just below a Grand Slam, it is still kandatory for top players to attend and secure ranking points.
The most famous player to dominate this even is of course Rafael Nadal, with 5 title wins. Carlos Alcaraz however became the youngest champion when he won in 2022 at 19 years old.

Having had the priveledge of attending the tournament this year, it was my second Tennis Open having attended the Miami Open a few years ago and was a completely different experience. Being able to watch the players train as well before the matches was very interesting. Although some players such as Alcaraz had to pull out due to injury, the men’s final on Sunday is still expected to be an exciting match with at leats one finalist already known Jannik Sinner.
